Here at the Vermont Apartments we encourage residents to maintain health as a priority, both mentally and physically. From at-home workouts to improving your cooking skills, here are some tips at staying healthy.
How to Eat Healthy at Home
There are many ways to improve the health of your meals, from using more veggies, to reducing the amount of cheese and meat you eat, both of which are recommended by choosemyplate.gov, a useful online resource to learn about healthy eating. They also recommend satisfying your sweet tooth with fruits instead of desserts like brownies and candy. Try new foods, such as lentils, mangos, quinoa, or eggplant. You can get creative in the kitchen and combine different combinations of protein, carbs, fruits and veggies in dishes, such as stir frys, salads, and casseroles. Try making your favorite Los Angeles food trend – such as poke or acai bowls.
You can workout from the comfort of your own living room. There are many workouts to try such as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) as well as The PLP Progression, which stands for Pull-Up, Lunges, and Push Ups, both explained on nerdfitness.com. For this daily workout, you’ll add one rep per day. At the beginning of the month, you may only be doing one rep of each, but by the end, you’ll be doing 30! You can workout with or without equipment. If you prefer to workout with an instructor, you can even hire an online personal trainer, who will be able to check in with you via FaceTime or Zoom. Staying in shape has never been more convenient. If you want to get out of the house for some fresh air and sunlight, you can also go for a hike at Griffith Park or take a stroll along the ocean at Santa Monica Beach!
Improve Your Mental Health
Coronavirus restrictions have implemented many restrictions on our daily life that we otherwise would have never expected. From social distancing guidelines to wearing masks in public, many people’s mental health may have been impacted. Fortunately, the aforementioned advice on staying healthy can positively influence mental health. Getting some sunlight and moving your body can improve your mood. Other great ways to improve your mood are to call or text your friends to catch up, or get out any frustrations by journaling, according to The University of Michigan Health Department. In addition to relieving anxiety through journaling, write down what you are grateful for. This can help redirect your thoughts toward positivity instead of focusing on what’s going wrong in life.
Whether you decide to meditate, do yoga or cardio, eat a salad filled with your favorite lean meats and veggies, or even all the above, we hope you are finding creative ways to stay healthy at home.
